Joliet Junior College
Amount Awarded: $2,500,000
The Will County HEROES Teaching & Nursing Scholarship is igniting a new generation of heroes by providing $10 million in funding for teaching and nursing students who live in Will County and expect to work at Will County education or health care institutions after graduation.
Utilizing American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, Will County provided $2.5 Million to each higher education partner for the scholarship program: Governors State University, University of St. Francis, Lewis University, and Joliet Junior College.
Joliet Junior College (JJC) has been making a strong impact in the lives of Will County students with the HEROES Scholarship, awarding $2,500,000 to 926 students. As of June 2025, 166 students graduated with associates degrees and 310 students graduated with certificates!
“Will County Heroes Nursing and Teaching helped me pursue my field and stay motivated to finish. I appreciate this scholarship for us future educators and nurses.”
–Cesar G., JJC Student and Future Special Education Teacher
The program awards participants $2,500 per semester, or $5,000 per academic year, in college tuition and fees as an education and employment incentive for professionals to stay and work in Will County, and has met with resounding success since its inception. The success of this grant has been the result of thoughtful collaboration throughout JJC, including multiple modes of promotion, a streamlined application process, and a short turnaround time from point of student application to point of scholarship award.

“The Will County Heroes Nursing and Teaching (ARPA Grant) Scholarship was a huge help during my last few years at JJC. It allowed me to come back to school to obtain my CNA and LPN certifications. In doing so, I am able to work in the healthcare field and give back to my community.”

one step closer to my goal. Without it, I would have taken out a school loan, adding more to my debt. It’s sad to hear that the summer 2025 semester is the last time this scholarship is able to help.”

“The Will County Heroes Nursing and Teaching (ARPA Grant) Scholarship has greatly eased the financial burden of pursuing my education in healthcare. Nursing school comes with many expenses, and a lot of time and dedication – which can quickly become overwhelming. This scholarship allowed me to focus on my coursework and clinical training without constantly worrying about how I will afford the next semester.”

“In the beginning of this year I made a vow to myself to continue the path I started to become a teacher and be dedicated and committed FULLY to my education. I took a leap of faith and decided to accept this scholarship to better my future. I am so very grateful for this scholarship and the doors and connections it opened for me. I know that because of this scholarship my summer tuition was covered, taking the extra responsibility and stress off of me having to worry about my finances and how I was going to complete the path I started. I thank you guys so very much.”

“I was hesitant on where to go to school because I had a bad initial start. When I heard about the scholarship, I thought it was a sign that I’m meant to pursue my special education degree and have been elated that I started. I wish the scholarship was still going! I can only take so many classes at a time due to the fact that I work at a school from 8-4 but I definitely want to finish. Having the scholarship helped immensely.”
